Sicily Islands strikes first, suffers loss to Ouachita Chrisitan

After allowing an early touchdown to Sicily Island High School, the Ouachita Christian School Eagles scored 36 consecutive points in the first half and cruised to a 54-28 win in the LHSAA District 2-1A opener for both teams Friday night.

Sicily Island jumped out to an 8-0 lead at the 9:03 mark of the first quarter, but two touchdowns midway through the quarter by Ouachita Christian allowed the Eagles, ranked No. 5 in the Division IV power ratings, to take the lead for good at 14-8.

The Eagles then scored 22 straight points to go ahead 36-8 with 2:06 to go in the second quarter. The Tigers, the No. 12 team in the Class 1A power ratings, scored a touchdown in the waning seconds of the first half to go into halftime down 36-14.

Ouachita Christian (3-1, 1-0) was up 48-14 before Sicily Island scored a touchdown and two-point conversion with 2:00 remaining to try the make the final score more respectable at 48-22. Instead of running out the clock, the Eagles scored again to make it a 54-22 game with 1:31 left.

The Tigers returned the favor with a touchdown of their own with 29 seconds to go.

Sicily Island (2-2, 0-1) plays at Delta Charter School at 7 p.m. next Friday.
