ACCS set for home football opener against St. Al

After its preseason jamboree was rained out, local Adams County Christian School fans and supporters will receive their first glimpse at this year’s Rebel football team Friday night.
The Rebels are set to host St. Aloysius for their home opener, and kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
“We are obviously excited to be on our home field,” ACCS coach David King said. “Since we didn’t get to have our jamboree, our home crowd has yet to see us play.”
This was the second straight year the Rebels have had to cancel its jamboree because of weather, and while ACCS rolled to a 34-7 opening-week victory at Central Hinds Academy, King said he still sees room for improvement.
“We came out a little sloppy,” he said. “As my experience tells me, you always improve much more from Week 1 to 2.”
Highlighting last week’s victory, ACCS’ DyKevis Ford and Mj Thornburg both ran in touchdowns from more than 40 yards.
Defensively, Julian Wilson recovered a fumble for a touchdown, and D.J. Stampley had an interception and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
“We had some big plays,” King said. “The good thing about it was everybody got to play, and a lot of people played well in their spots. Though there is room to grow, everyone showed they were capable of contributing.
“This seems to be the type of team where even the non-starters can get in there at times, which is always a positive.”
Senior quarterback Jacob McDaniel added a score last week on a 23-yard pass to D.D. Wright.
Though King said the signal-caller also has room to progress, he was pleased with the effort.
“(McDaniel) had some moments, and he did OK for the first game,” King said. “He is a hard worker, and I think he’ll get there.”
The Flashes are coming off a loss to begin their season, falling to Leake Academy last week, 21-13.
St. Al’s biggest asset, King said, will be its dynamic roster.
“They have some big playmakers, no question,” King said. “I think the wet field hurt them in their game last week. On the film, they play very hard, and they looked to be very, very athletic.”
As its home crowd gets ready for Friday night, Rebel fans will see a new addition to its football field.
ACCS athletic director Richy Spears said after talks last season about replacing the school’s old scoreboard, a new one was installed in late July.
“It was faded and had old bulb lights. It was old school,” Spears said. “The new one has LEDs. We hope it ends in our favor.”
