Olivia Moore scored two goals and the Cathedral High School defense stood tall when it needed to most as the Lady Green Wave got past Brookhaven Academy 2-0 in an MAIS girls soccer match Monday evening.
“Olivia is rock solid,” CHS coach Dennis Hogue said. “She’s fast. She’s smart. She’s strong, and she’s composed, which is probably the most important.”
The game marked Cathedral’s first game of the year after being rained out three times in previous weeks.
The match also served as a district contest, and Hogue said he was happy his team was able to emerge with the win despite the lack of prior games.
“This is a district match, so this game matters,” he said. “I’d love to have some non-district matches to work out the kinks. But I’m so happy we’re playing.”
Moore scored her first goal just before the end of the first half, then struck again late in the second to seal the win for her squad.
“I’ve never scored that much in a game, so it was real exciting,” Moore said. “Since the rain, we haven’t been able to practice as much and run, so we’ve been out of shape. But we were doing our best, and I think we did really well for our first game, especially a district game.”
Hogue said at halftime he thought his team was in control, but felt one more score would be enough to give his team the win.
“I didn’t think they could come back from (down two goals),” he said. “But if they got a goal on us, then it would be anybody’s game.”
However, Lady Green Wave goalkeeper Rivers Lee wasn’t going to let that happen.
Lee secured several key stops in the second half to keep her squad ahead by the one-goal margin until Moore recorded her second score.
“I told Rivers that (Brookhaven) was going to be shooting, and she stepped up,” Hogue said. “She was our backup keeper last year, and she did well. I think she’s going to be alright.”
Cathedral will be back in action at 4 p.m. Thursday on the road at Discovery Christian.
