The Cathedral Green Wave rallied back from a 17-0 first-quarter deficit to defeat the Brookhaven Academy Cougars 49-24 in the season-opener Friday night.
The comeback was due in large part to a strong effort from senior running back Greg Moore, who scored six touchdowns.
Cathedral scored 21 points in the second quarter to take the lead for good. The Green Wave added 14 points in both the third and fourth quarters. Brookhaven Academy scored just seven points in the third.
Moore finished with 23 carries for 260 yards. As a team, Cathedral racked up 490 yards of total offense and 26 first downs.
The Green Wave won the game despite turning the ball over four times and giving up 315 yards of total offense to the Cougars. Cathedral’s defense forced five turnovers of its own, including a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Cathedral (1-0) plays host to Central Private School in an MAIS District 5-AAA game at 7 p.m. next Friday.
