Adams County Christian School won both of its jamboree games Friday night at Oak Forest Academy.
Cathedral High School split its pair of games during the jamboree.
The Rebels defeated North Pike in their first game, 10-0, and Oak Forest in its second, 13-7.
“In those types of games, there is nothing I can say except I’m proud of these guys,” ACCS coach David King said. “We got to play a lot of guys, and we saw some really good things. There was effort from the time they got off the bus until the last whistle.”
DyKevis Ford ended with two long touchdown runs to lead the Rebels, one in each game. His first score was a 70-yarder and his second from 94 yards out.
“He has grown up a lot and matured,” King said. “That was one of the plays we have had out the gate, and he hit it.”
King said he saw potential along the offensive front in which ACCS lost multiple key starters to graduation last season.
“I thought we really blocked well at times,” he said. “There is a chance for young guys to step up, and we could get really good as time goes on.”
ACCS’ defense also ended on a high note with Kemari Clark recovering a fumble for a 40-yard touchdown and Yohan Thompson snagging an interception.
“Defensively I was very pleased,” King said. “We were able to adjust to both of those offenses.”
Cristofer Thompson also added a 32-yard field goal in the first game.
The Rebels will travel to Central Hinds Academy for its first regular-season game at 7 p.m. next Friday.
Cathedral 7, Loyd Star 6;
Centreville 24, Cathedral 6
Cathedral beat Loyd Star 7-6 in its opener before falling in the nightcap to Centreville, 24-6.
“I saw a lot of good effort,” Cathedral coach Chuck Darbonne said. “The first game we came out, and I think we kind of answered a bunch of questions that we had about facing somebody else. There were some jitters, but we got real physical. There was still a few mental mistakes, but overall for the first game I thought we had great effort.”
Greg Moore scored on a 1-yard run and Platini Doan connected on the PAT to give Green Wave the victory.
Darbonne said the Cathedral offensive line proved to be a strength throughout Friday’s action.
“We got a great push up front,” he said. “Everybody did their job. Then Greg Moore and (running back) Bryson Moore ran very hard and fought for extra yards.”
The second-year coach also credited his receiving corps for making a number of key third-down receptions.
In the second game, Darbonne said he felt the Green Wave didn’t match the intensity level from the Tigers.
Bryson Moore scored Cathedral’s lone score on a 9-yard run that was set up on a long reception from Ty Bertelsen.
“We got out of position and that cost us on some of the touchdowns,” he said.
Cathedral will open its 2017 season next Friday at Brookhaven Academy.
“I told them that we need to keep working on the things we’ve been working on in practice and to keep striving to be the best player they can be,” Darbonne said. “We still have some things to fix, but overall I was impressed for the first game.”
