NATCHEZ — Cathedral School and law enforcement officials have conducted an investigation regarding violent threats allegedly made against the school via an individual’s Snapchat account.

Cathedral Chief Administrator Norm Yvon Thursday sent out a letter to parents of Cathedral students. The letter notified parents of the threat and offered assurance that the school and Catholic Diocese of Jackson are taking the threat seriously.

The Natchez Police Department reported that officers were dispatched to the school on July 24 regarding a threat made through a post on an individual’s Snapchat account. Police said a concerned parent notified the school of the threat, which concerned the first day of school (today).

Police said they have identified the person responsible for posting the Snapchat video, but they are not releasing the subject’s identity at this time.

Police also reported the department’s investigative division is “working closely with the subject’s attorney to bring the issue to a close.”

In a written statement, diocese superintendent Catherine Cook said the school informed local and state law enforcement immediately after learning of the potential threat. Cook said the school and law enforcement have investigated the matter but have found no evidence of “a credible threat to commit violence against the school.”

“Cathedral School will have added security present when the school opens on Friday,” Cook said. “School officials have taken and will continue to take all necessary steps to provide for the safety of its students, staff and others on school property.”
