Sydney Watts tossed a complete game and the Louisiana bats erupted for a second straight night as it beat Colorado 20-0 in five innings Monday in the 16-and-under Senior League Softball Southwestern Region Tournament in Vidalia.
The Vidalia-based all-star team picked up right where it left off in Sunday night’s 13-0 win over New Mexico.
Shelby Mason started Louisiana off hot, smoking a triple down into the left-field corner in the bottom of the first.
Louisiana scored three runs in the frame to seize control.
However, just as it did on Sunday, the second inning is when the area standouts pulled away.
Louisiana sent 13 batters to the plate in in an eight-run rally, highlighted by Watts’ two-run double and Hailey Ellis’ two-run single up the middle. Watts added a double later in the game.
Watts struck out six batters in the game in recording her team’s second-consecutive complete game.
“I was very proud of the way she pitched,” Louisiana coach Leighanne Mason said. “She hit her spots, and it seemed like with her good pitching, it helped her at the plate as well.”
With the win, Louisiana now will play at 6 p.m. today against Texas West in the elimination portion of the tournament.
“The real test is going to start coming tomorrow,” Mason said. “We just keep telling the girls to take it one game at a time.”
