New Mexico made quite the opening statement Saturday with a 24-0 win over Colorado.
Louisiana, however, raised the bar Sunday night.
The Vidalia-based squad exploded for eight runs through the first two innings and pitcher Jensen Gremillion tossed a no-hitter as the team run-ruled New Mexico 13-0 in five innings in the 16-and-under Senior League Softball Southwestern Region Tournament in Vidalia.
“It was a good night at the plate,” Louisiana coach Tate Lipscomb said. “That was the first time we’ve seen live pitching in a while, and I was kind of impressed with them. We hit the ball, scored some runs and ran the bases real well.”
Shelbi Cross led Louisiana offensively with three hits to go along with four RBIs.
“That’s why she is in the middle of the lineup, so that she can (drive runners home) when they get on base,” Lipscomb said.
While the Louisiana bats were red hot at the plate, Gremillion stymied the New Mexico bats just a day after its offensive outburst.
“We had one error behind, but she was close to a perfect game,” Lipscomb said. “She did a great job. I was proud of her.”
After jumping out to a 3-0 advantage in the first, Louisiana pulled away with a five-run second. A three run third gave Louisiana a double-digit lead, 11-0, before ending the game with solo runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings.
Louisiana will attempt to keep the momentum going at 8 p.m. tonight when facing Colorado in Vidalia.
