Vidalia all-star team hopeful to claim regional championship

As the Vidalia Little League 16-and-unders host the Southwest Regional Tournament this weekend, coach Leighanne Mason expects the third time to be the charm.
A majority of this year’s all-star team, Mason said, has played together the past two years in the 14-and-under age group, and has just one member from last year’s 16s.
With a third-place finish in regionals two years ago and a second-place finish last year, Mason said she is hopeful this year’s squad can finally finish on top.
“We feel like this is our year,” she said. “Our one goal is to make it to (the World Series in) Delaware.”
One of Vidalia’s biggest strengths, Mason said, is its diversity of players. The team is made of players from Jena, Avoyelles Parish, Ferriday, Vidalia and Natchez.
“We are a true Miss-Lou team,” she said. “It’s a good mix. They love each other, too.
“They stay in touch with each other all through the year and watch each other play when they can.”
Mason said since most of Vidalia’s squad has played in a regional, she thinks the experience will be a great benefit.
“It’s a whirlwind, but all of these girls have been in that pressure situation before,” she said. “I don’t worry about their nerves getting in the way. They are just ball players.”
Mason also said she has developed confidence her players after seeing a great deal of passion during recent practices.
“They know what to do. You don’t really have to coach them,” she said. “I talk to them about making the big play and taking the extra step. To me, that’s the difference in winning and losing.
“It’s going to come down to pitching, hitting and defense. The first person to 21 outs wins the game.”
Another obvious advantage, Mason said, is the chance to play in front of local fans.
“It’s kind of a big deal,” she said. “We expect the parks to be packed and want everyone to come and watch.”
When all is said and done, Mason said she just hopes everyone enjoys the tournament.
“I want to make it fun for all the girls and let them see what Louisiana and Mississippi has to offer,” she said.
With a bye in the first round, Vidalia’s first game of the tournament is slated for 8 p.m. Sunday.
