NATCHEZ — For people traveling from Natchez to Vidalia by way of their iPhone map, the route just got much, much faster.
For nearly a week after construction work closed the westbound span of the bridge, a glitch in the smartphone app sent motorists hours to the north and south to other bridges crossing the Mississippi River.
The software was not aware that the eastbound lane had been open to two-way traffic since the original closure.
The glitch was fixed and now properly routes people to the two-way traffic on the open bridge. The bridge closure is scheduled to last approximately one year as construction crews make structural upgrades, sandblast and paint the structure.
Officials with the Natchez Office of Tourism discovered the map was fixed Wednesday morning. Since they were notified of the problem last week, the office has been in contact with Apple in order to fix the problem.
Other map websites, including Google Maps and Mapquest did not appear to have the same problem.
