Natchez High School dropped Game 2 of its MHSAA Class 5A first round playoff series with Wayne County Saturday, 11-4, ultimately ending its season.

The Bulldogs (10-17) allowed six runs in the first inning and could never spark enough offense to make a comeback, despite posting two runs in the final frame.

“We got behind,” NHS coach Dan Smith said. “I’m happy they fought back because we could have easily gave up.”

Smith said although he knows this year’s team needed experience, he was still pleased with their overall effort.

Natchez made the playoffs for the third consecutive year under Smith, and will lose four seniors in Ty Terrell, Jordan Hamilton, Charlie Latham and Jeremy Lewis.

“I’m very proud of them,” Smith said. “I am looking forward to getting back to work, and they are, too. We’ve already planned some summer workouts and weight lifting.”

Jatavis Melton led the offensive efforts for Natchez batting 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Jakel Barnes also added an RBI.

Hamilton took the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs in two innings.
