NATCHEZ — More than two years after the Eola Hotel closed, City of Natchez officials are seeking answers about the future plans for the historic downtown building.

Virginia Attorney Robert Lubin, who purchased the hotel in 2014, is scheduled to appear before the Natchez Board of Aldermen at 6 p.m. Tuesday to give a status report on his plans to transform the former hotel into senior-living apartments.Mayor Darryl Grennell requested Lubin give an update to the board, saying he was concerned about the future of the building.

Plans to renovate the historic hotel and transform the building into senior-living apartments were submitted to the City of Natchez for approval in January 2016. The plans received final approval in April 2016.

Following city approval, the developers said the plans had to be reworked, and revised plans were completed in September.

In December, Lubin estimated the project’s construction loan would close and construction could start in late January or mid-February.

Grennell said he does not want to the see the project delayed indefinitely.

Downtown business owners have said the hotel’s closure has had a negative impact on their businesses, with less foot traffic and fewer people patronizing the surrounding shops, restaurants and bars.

“I’m just really concerned about (the Eola) and the future of downtown and the building,” Grennell said. “It’s a wonderful hotel, and architecturally, it’s a beautiful place, and you hear a lot of tourists ask about it.

“When I was a kid, the Eola was a vacant building, and eventually it was restored and reopened. I just want to see it alive again.”

Tuesday’s meeting is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. in the City Council Chambers on Pearl Street, across from the Natchez City Hall.
