NATCHEZ — Services for Mamie Lee Green Mazique, 86, of Natchez, who died Monday, April 17, 2017, at her residence, will be 1 p.m. Friday at King Solomon Baptist Church, 6 Spring St., in Natchez, with the Rev. Curtis Smith officiating.  
Burial will follow at the Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Robert D. Mackel and Sons Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and from noon until service time Friday at the church.
Mrs. Mazique was born July 29, 1930, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Mose and Daisy Simon Green.
She was married to Herman Wesley Mazique and to this union one son was born, Herman Wesley “Chock” Mazique Jr.
Mrs. Mazique attended Jefferson County and Adams County public schools. She also attended Natchez Junior College and later received a bachelor of science degree in child care and family education from Jackson State University and a master’s degree in elementary education from Alcorn State University. She furthered her studies at University of California Los Angeles Management Institute in Los Angeles. She also received a number of awards and plaques over the years for her outstanding work both professionally and as a humanitarian.
Mrs. Mazique was formerly employed by STAR Inc. (Systematic Development Adult Program) in the early 1960s. She later began a career with AJFC where she served as Project Headstart director, being the first woman to serve in this capacity in Natchez 40 years before her retirement in 2006. The program provided low income children and their families with education, social and medical assistance and adult literacy. She was also a small business entrepreneur who employed a number of citizens for more than 20 years, helping to improve their lives for those living in Adams and Jefferson Counties.
Mrs. Mazique was a member of King Solomon Baptist Church and a number of other organizations which included the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and was one of its founding members in Natchez, the National Council of Negro Women, a former member of the Adams County Water Association where she served as a board member for 20 years.
Mrs. Mazique also served as a member of judicial board for the State of Mississippi, the Medgar Evers Board of Directors and the Farmers Home Administration for Adams County. Additionally, she served as an active member of the civil rights movement.
Through her exceptional commitment to Natchez and the surrounding communities, she made a significant impact. Mrs. Mazique was a kind, caring and giving individual who loved family, those closely associated with her and humanity overall. Helping people in multiple ways, her doors were always open for those in need or for society’s less fortunate. Her philosophy in life was “never overlook those that seem insignificant, but rather, embrace them because even the forest would be dull if only the best birds sang!”
Mrs. Mazique was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her loving son; and her siblings and in-laws, Semonia Jackson and husband, Saul, Moseanna Green, Augusta Warren and husband, Arthur, Aliene Walker and husband, Isiah, Annie Jones and husband, Archie, Georgia Belton and husband, Rembert, Hilda Steverson and husband, Eugene, Semo “Bud” Green, Bernice Davis and husband, Lee Arthur, Daisy Green, Bessie Green, Essie Carter, Bessie Carridine, Hazel Green and J.P. Green.
Survivors include one grandson, a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
