NATCHEZ — Although some of area’s most well known singers will be on stage, the stars of Sunday evening’s Holy Family Gospel Extravaganza will likely be the youngest singers in the crowd.
The kindergartners of Holy Family Learning Center have been getting ready to take the spotlight during the gospel concert fundraiser for their school.
The young singers will join area veteran gospel singers, including Alvin Shelby and his Combined Choirs, Brothers in Christ, Tony Fields, Brittany Mitchell and Jessica Hawkins.
The Holy Family Gospel Extravaganza begins at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Holy Family Catholic Church on St. Catherine Street.
Organizers of the event have been working since January to create a big event to raise money for the Natchez Catholic school that teaches children from 2-years old to kindergarten.
“The concert is all about the school, all about the children,” event organizer Jerome Myles said.
Those who want to come support the school and listen to some of the area’s best gospel music can pay at the door or buy tickets from one of the school’s students, Myles said. The cost for admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students.
All proceeds go to Holy Family Early Learning Center, Myles said.
Myles and his wife Elizabeth say they are impressed with the education their child has received and only wish the students could continue past kindergarten.
“The staff has done an awesome job with our child,” Myles said.
Event committee member Irma Woods said most of the students who attend the learning center are non-Catholic.
Once the students graduate, they go on to attend public and private schools in the whole community — a reason for people to come support the school, Woods said.
“We want the community to get involved,” event committee member Irma Woods said. “The students really shine and carry back what they learn into the community.”
