For 109 years, the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. have responded to the world’s increasing demands. The sorority continues to empower communities through initiatives and programs.
The members of Zeta Delta Omega Chapter have partnered with our local greeks to sponsor our eighth teen summit for the youth in the Miss-Lou community on Saturday. Teens are the most active in society today. With the advancing of the world, technology and cultural changes teens are highly affected. Their needs and wants change; their attitudes have changed; and the way they look at life has taken a whole new turning point. The ultimate goal of the summit will be to motivate, engage and assist these students in reaching their maximum potential. We would like to address the following issues — SMART (science, math and related technology), drug and alcohol abuse, health issues and academic issues.
We are grateful to have the following partners: Alcorn State University, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. There will be more than 20 presenters from a diverse job arena.
This year’s guest speaker will be Kevin Wilbert, the director of operations for the pharmacology and toxicology department of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he administers all operational affairs in accordance and compliance with federal, state, local and university statutes, policies and regulations.
The purpose of the sorority is to address major concerns of the community by being a service to all and to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards among college women. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. fulfills its purpose through its programs.
Our theme for 2014-2018 is “Launching New Dimensions of Service.” The teen summit is just one way that we provide timeless service.
We invite you to join us on this journey and accept this great mission as we render services to all mankind. Remember the event is from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the ASU School of Nursing and MBA building time. Refreshments will be served and we will have many door prizes. Children of all ages are invited to attend.
Brenda Jarvis is the connection chairman for the Zeta Delta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha.
