A pair of scores in the final 10 minutes proved to be the difference Wednesday as Adams County Christian School topped city rival Cathedral 4-2 on the Rebels’ senior day.

Cristofer Thompson broke a 2-2 tie and Marshall Edmonds put ACCS ahead for good just minutes later.

“This is fantastic, and I’m very happy for all of my seniors,” ACCS coach Jim Bob Allgood said. “We played an ugly first half of soccer, we adjusted and my guys took care of business.”

The contest was also special for the Green Wave as it marked the final game for nine CHS seniors.

“I think both teams played very well,” CHS coach Dennis Hogue said. “The second half, things got a little heated because both teams are passionate, bragging rights and things like that.”

Cathedral struck first with a goal in the 18th minute from John Ashton Hicks.

ACCS answered with a score from Thompson late in the first, then struck again after senior Brian Duong knocked in a cross from Thompson to give his squad a 2-1 halftime lead.

“We had people out of position constantly because they were trying to make a play,” Hogue said. “Then trying to recover with a team like (ACCS), everybody on their team is fast; you can’t cheat 40 yards one way, then try to recover 40 yards the other way.”

In the second half the two squads each applied pressure offensively, but both were turned away by nifty goalkeeping play.

Cathedral keeper Daniel Garrity and ACCS’ Jacob McDaniel each recorded multiple saves to keep the score 2-1.

However, in the 64th minute, Cathedral notched a game-tying score from Derick Nunez.

Thompson and ACCS then turned it on from there to come out with a hard-fought win.

“Both teams played at a very high level,” Allgood said. “There were multiple (opportunities) for both teams. We turned it up a little bit more in the second half, and the team I’ve been looking for showed up.”

ACCS will host St. Aloysius in the opening round of the MAIS AAA playoffs at 3 p.m. Monday.

“First step is St. Al, second step is Central Hinds,” Allgood said. “St. Al is a very good soccer team. Our guys better bring it.”
