Cathedral athletics continues expansion

After having completed numerous projects in the past year, Cathedral High School is set to tackle its latest by constructing a new athletics field house.
In January, the Cathedral administration met with parents and outlined a initial plan for the field house. Parents were shown layout locations of the new project.
By the next day, parents and supporters had pulled together more than $100,000, and an anonymous donor came forward to match the sum. A promotional brochure estimates the field house will cost approximately $800,000.
Since, the Cathedral C-Club, the school’s athletics booster club, has raised more than $300,000, not including the anonymous donor’s pledge.
“We’ve received tremendous community support from the Cathedral family,” CHS athletic director Craig Beesley said. “We’ve been talking about this for a while, and now we’re in the final phase. We’re all excited.”
The new field house is set to be constructed between the softball and football fields and will provide locker rooms for both programs, in addition to boys and girls soccer, coaching offices and equipment and training rooms. Plans are set for the field house to open in July 2017, just prior to the start of the girls soccer season.
“It’s exciting for our kids, and all the coaching staffs are excited,” Beesley said.
The new field house is set to replace the more than the three-decade-old current field house, and is the latest in a number of recent upgrades. Cathedral recently completed construction for a press box and concession stand for its softball field, renovated the football field’s press box, bathrooms and concession stand, as well as updating site utilities.
Donations continue to flow in and are still being accepted.
“All Cathedral parents are excited to see this,” Beesley said. “It’s been a long process.”
