Cathedral High School busted through with six second-half goals en route to rolling past Central Private 7-1 in boys soccer action Tuesday.

The Green Wave dominated the second half, constantly applying pressure to the Rebels defense.

“That’s what we wanted,” Cathedral coach Dennis Hogue said. “We were hoping for more quality finishes. The ball movement was there and the opportunity up top was there; the finishing was poor. Of those seven goals scored, there were still 30 more shots. I lost count. We just have to finish.”

Derick Nunez paced the Wave with three scores as Cathedral improved its mark to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in district.

Daniel Garrity, Derick Nunez, John Ashton Hicks and Ty Bertelsen each added scores for the Green Wave.

In the first half, Hogue flipped his lineup around, moving traditional defensive players to forward positions and attacking players to defense.

“We were trying to give our defense an appreciation for what the offense does,” Hogue said.

Nunez got the second-half scoring barrage started with a goal in the first five minutes. Bertelsen then poured in his goal moments later.

Central Private countered with its lone score, but that’s as close as the Rebels would come.

Cathedral inserted its junior varsity lineup for the final five minutes in cruising to the win.

“I wish we would have gotten them in a little earlier,” Hogue said. “We were hoping to get them in the final 10 minutes, but they finally got in.”

Cathedral now turns its attention to Laurel Christian Thursday then must beat in-city rival Adams County Christian School later in the year in hopes of claiming top honors in district.

“We’re pleased with the win,” Hogue said. “We’ve got to beat them to stay in the hunt (in district). If we lose, we’re done.
