Amite School Center was no match for Cathedral High School’s aggressive defense and pace of play on offense as the Lady Green Wave rolled to a 58-33 win over the Lady Rebels Monday night.
Cathedral (17-4 overall) jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and never looked back. By halftime, the Lady Green Wave had a commanding 44-14 advantage over the Lady Rebels.
“I thought we did a really good job with our press, a 2-2-1 and also a full-court man press,” Cathedral girls head coach Peter Arnold said. “It really sped the game up faster than they wanted to play at that point.”
With the home team having such a big lead, Arnold would not keep his starters in too long after halftime. He took them out and put his bench players in after the opening four minutes of the third quarter.
Elizabeth Smith finished with a game-high 16 points while Marty Lewis had 11 points, and Natalie Fletcher added 10 points for Cathedral.
“We played with a lot of effort on defense and that set up our offense,” Arnold said. “Elizabeth played really good. She hit a lot of shots inside. Marty played aggressively. Natalie played well. It was a good team win.”
Arnold said that with three games remaining this week, he didn’t want his starters to expend too much energy and that getting out to a big lead so that he could get the backups some playing time was key.
Sarah Booty led Amite School Center with 13 points.
The Lady Green Wave play host to Silliman Institute at 6p.m. today.
“We’re looking forward to it. They knocked us out of the South State playoffs by two points last year,” Arnold said.

Derrion Batieste scored 28 points and Connor Mire poured in 25 points as the Cathedral Green Wave defeated the Amite School Center Rebels 69-40 Monday night.
Despite the lopsided final score, Cathedral head coach Matthew Hall was not pleased with how the team played for much of the game.
“We came out kind of sluggish. We didn’t come out with the right mentality. It wasn’t until late third, early fourth quarter that we responded well,” Hall said.
The Green Wave was only up 45-33 after three quarters of play before outscoring the Rebels 24-7 in the fourth quarter.
The win for the Green Wave (7-14) was its second in a row after edging past Laurel Christian on the road, 61-57.
Cathedral will attempt to keep the momentum going at 7:30 p.m. today when it hosts Silliman Institute.
