FERRIDAY — After being suspended for approximately a month, Ferriday Police Chief Arthur Lewis is wearing his badge again.

Ferriday Mayor Sherrie Jacobs made the announcement this week at the town’s board of aldermen meeting. On Thursday, Jacobs declined to go into details surrounding the suspension.

Jacobs announced on Dec. 7 Lewis had been placed on administrative leave for an unspecified period of time. He was suspended following a Dec. 2 incident in which three people — two officers and a dispatcher — in the department were fired.

Jacobs said the three individuals who were terminated have not been reinstated.

During Lewis’ administrative leave, Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office senior deputy John Cowan was placed in charge of the department and tasked with helping clear up “administrative issues” at the department.

Cowan has returned to work at the sheriff’s office, CPSO Chief Deputy David Hedrick said Thursday.

Hedrick said while in Ferriday, Cowan helped the town’s police with a clear chain of command for evidence and put order to the ranking structure, placing more officers in patrol units.

“He put everyone of rank onto the roads so they can have more of an impact on the neighborhoods, highway and the school,” Hedrick said.

Hedrick said he had faith in Cowan’s ability to do the job and the senior deputy rose to the occasion.

“The department was headed in a positive direction when John left,” Hedrick said. “We wish the town of Ferriday good luck, and if they ever need a thing in the future, we will always be there for them and the people of Ferriday, as we are for all of the people in the parish.”

Lewis did not return messages left at the FPD office and on his cell phone.
