NATCHEZ — Dayday McCoy didn’t need a pair of skates to play on the ice Saturday.
When The Dart landed on the McLaurin Elementary School campus Saturday, McCoy, 14, was shooting hoops on an icy gravel top, while his favorite hip-hop artist blared in the background.
McCoy moved with his family to Natchez last year from Wisconsin and is currently a freshman at Natchez High School.
He said enjoys most sports, but basketball was one he didn’t mind playing in frigid, winter weather conditions.
“Anytime is a good time to play basketball,” McCoy said, “I’ve been doing it since I was a kid and I play on the (Natchez High) team here.”
McCoy said moving 15 hours from Wisconsin to Natchez has been an adjustment.
“It’s a new environment, and it’s really cold up there in the winter,” McCoy said, “I’m not too worried about it here.”
The Bulldog freshman said he’s made some friends here and sometimes they go to the gym in Vidalia to work out. But Saturday McCoy was content just to shoot hoops himself.
“So much is different here, the people, music, weather and school,” McCoy said.
McCoy siad the biggest adjustment he’s had to make he’s had to make is getting used to the schoolwork load, but said the change has been worth it.
“I am hoping the next couple of years I fit in, and just get more comfortable around new people here.” McCoy said.
