NATCHEZ — Firefighters from the Natchez Fire Department and from the Adams County’s volunteer fire stations responded to a fire early Friday morning at the Von Drehle plant on Majorca Road in the Natchez-Adams County Port area.
Battalion Chief Ventris Green said Natchez firefighters responded at 6 a.m. to reports of a fire in one of the paper supplier’s storage areas.
Green said two shifts with approximately 15 firefighters worked the scene from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m. Natchez firefighters were also joined by Adams County volunteer firefighters from the Liberty Road, Foster Mound and Kingston fire stations.
“The guys did a great job containing the fire and extinguishing it,” Green said.
Also assisting were crews from American Medical Response, Metro Ambulance and the Red Cross.
Green said the fire was contained in approximately two hours. The remainder of the time was spent moving paper out of the facility and extinguishing any remaining smoldering areas.
Von Drehle site manager Joe Pankratz said the fire did not damage the building or any of the company’s equipment. Operations will resume as normal, he said.
“There was no damage to the plant,” Pankratz said. “The firefighters did a good job responding to the situation.”
Green said the cause of the fire is under investigation and no injuries were reported on the scene Friday.
“It was a lot more smoke than anything,” Green said.
