NATCHEZ — Adams County and Concordia Parish’s weather forecast calls for the possibility of freezing rain, sleet and perhaps snow.
National Weather Service Meteorologist John Moore III said light rain is expected all day in the Miss-Lou, but as the temperatures get under freezing after 5 or 6 p.m., the ice and sleet could start accumulating on bridges and overpasses.
Moore said because ground temperatures will still be relatively high, a lot of accumulation is not expected. However, trees and power lines could see small ice formations, but Moore said ice accumulation should not be enough to cause power outages.
Moore said for freezing rain, approximately one-tenth to one-quarter of an inch of accumulation is anticipated. Less than one-tenth of an inch of sleet is forecast.
During the night and before Saturday morning, Moore said the Miss-Lou could see snow.
“On the backside as the system moves out, you could see some snowflakes,” Moore said. “People waking up early Saturday morning could see a few flurries sticking around.”
Moore said drivers should be cautious on bridges and overpasses, which can ice over more quickly than other roadways.Natchez Public Works Supervisor Justin Dollar said his office is monitoring the situation and has sand ready to use on the roads and bridges in the event of a freeze.
Concordia Parish Homeland Security Director Payne Scott said road crews were also ready in the parish.
“We are prepared for it,” Scott said. “The main thing is to tread with care. If you don’t have to get on the road, don’t get on the road.”
Adams County Emergency Management Director Robert Bradford said the Mississippi Department of Transportation, which handles the spans of Mississippi River Bridge, would be ready with sand, as well.
Scott said Delta Charter School would be closed. The Concordia Parish School Board is monitoring the situation, he said.
Natchez-Adams School District Public Relations Coordinator Steven Richardson said officials are also monitoring the situation. He said the plan, should the weather be bad enough, would be to dismiss early, between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Richardson said parents would be notified in the morning if school will be dismissed early.
Adams County Christian School officials released on Facebook plans to dismiss early. Pre-school-Kindergarten will dismiss at 11:45 a.m., grades 1-5 at noon, and grades 6-12 at 12:13 p.m.
Trinity Episcopal Day School officials announced at a parents meeting school would dismiss early at 12:30 p.m.
The high Friday and Saturday will be 37 degrees, Moore said. The low will be 22 degrees.
The cold spurt is not expected to last long, Moore said. By Tuesday, the high will be near 70, he said.
