New Year’s fireworks may be washed out

NATCHEZ — Miss-Lou residents will likely be ringing in a rainy and stormy New Year Saturday.
With a 90-percent chance of rain, the outlook is not good for those hoping to see fireworks light up the sky over the Mississippi River.
Fireworks over the river are set for 10 p.m.
“But it’s going to be very questionable,” organizer René Adams said. “There’s a chance they might not go off.”
In years past when it has rained, the fireworks show has been short because many fireworks got wet during setup, Adams said.
In an effort to maximize the already purchased fireworks, Adams said the show may be canceled in case of heavy rainfall, and the fireworks added to a spring event or to boost next year’s Fourth of July celebration.
For those looking to celebrate the Natchez Tricentennial and the New Year early in the evening and out of the rain, a Unity, Prayer and Peace Celebration is scheduled at the Natchez City Auditorium.
The event is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday.
The Natchez Tricentennial’s Faith and Religion Committee will conclude the year with a non-denominational community celebration filled with prayers, scripture readings and a concert of prayer. Local singers and choirs will perform religious music.
The event is free and open to all.
