A 13-0 spurt to start the second quarter was just the spark Trinity Episcopal needed as it stormed past Cathedral High School 63-43 in boys basketball Tuesday at the Adams County Christian School Invitational.
The Saints entered the second period trailing 15-14, but held the Green Wave scoreless through the first six minutes of the quarter to seize control.
The win for Trinity now gives the Saitns a 3-0 series lead over their city rivals
“(Cathedral) is a well-coached team, and it’s hard beating a team three times in a row,” Trinity coach Andy Blair said. “We really put in the work over Christmas break. It’s like we never took a break. We had a complete team effort tonight.”
Cathedral’s Connor Mire ended the scoring drought with a layup, but his squad would be outscored 17-3 for the quarter.
“We got out of whack,” CHS coach Matthew Hall said. “It’s the third time we played them, so we knew what to expect — when you get in a track meet with Trinity, it’s hard to win those kind of games.”
Mire led the Green Wave with 21 points, including a two-handed dunk in the fourth quarter, while Derrion Batieste added 17.
The two standouts along with William Doss are the lone seniors on the Green Wave roster, and Hall said a key for his squad is continuing to develop younger players to play a supporting role.
“Tyriek Lee is coming along really well,” Hall said of his sophomore post player, who scored three points and added much needed strength down low. “He’s one of the most physical guys on the team. With his size, he’s going to fill out. We’re trying every game and every practice for him to keep progressing and getting better and better.”
Trinity was led in scoring by wing players David Jackson and Jakarius Caston, who had 16 and 15 points, respectively.
However, perhaps the key contributor for the Saints was the play of DeSanto Rollins. The freshman big man scored nine points, including five in the opening quarter.
“He’s one that has really worked hard over the break, and we are really hard on him,” Blair said. “He’s really come along with his drop step. I think he’s figuring out how big he is and what a difference he can make. Once we establish him down low, it opens the game up for everyone else.”
Both teams will continue play today in the ACCS Invitational with Cathedral facing off at 3:15 p.m. against Wilkinson County Christian Academy, and Trinity playing at 5:45 p.m. against ACCS.
“(ACCS) is another well-coached team,” Blair said. “If we play as hard and as well as we did tonight, we’re going to be tough to beat.”
