Brandon Thompson scored 27 points and Laurel Christian School raced past Cathedral High School 63-25 in boys basketball Saturday afternoon.

“We’ve got people out and hurt. Three starters are either out (unavailable) or hurt,” Cathedral coach Matthew Hall said. “We’ve got guys not really running the offense.”

The Lions connected on 10 3-pointers in the win, including seven from Thompson. LCS built a 13-2 advantage midway through the first period and never looked back.

“Give them credit, they made some shots, and they made them early,” Hall said. “That stretched the game out early, and it kind of got out of hand quickly. It’s just an effort thing. The middle of Saturday is not a normal time to play, but if you don’t come to play every game, you’re going to get beat like this. We’ve got to run out and get out on 3-point shooters, and show a little more effort; it’s all about pride.”

Derrion Batieste led Cathedral with 10 points, and William Doss had eight points to go along with six rebounds, four steals and a blocked shot.

“William is a senior, he’s a leader, and he’s our workhorse,” Hall said. “He’s not your typical big guy, but he’s having to play that position for us this year. As hard as it is for him, he’s playing his butt off, and he will never quit. He never has and he never will.”

Karsten Knobles chipped in with 15 points for the Lions.

Cathedral will have nearly a week off before it hosts Sacred Heart on Friday.

“We need to get back to where we were playing about a week ago,” Hall said.

Cathedral (girls) 54, Laurel 18

Less than 24 hours after sustaining a disappointing 41-38 loss at the hands of Simpson Academy Friday night, the Lady Green Wave bounced back in resounding fashion early Saturday afternoon to roll past Laurel Christian 54-18.

“We just didn’t have it yesterday,” Cathedral coach Peter Arnold said. “I guess it was a hangover from the Tuesday night loss to (Adams County Christian School). Sometimes it’s just not there.”

Cathedral (8-2) never had a problem in this one, however, as it led 25-0 after the first quarter and 43-3 at the half.

All 12 Lady Green Wave players saw significant action and six players scored five points or more.

Mary Evans Kelly led Cathedral with eight points and Elizabeth Smith had seven.

“All 12 players scored by halftime,” Arnold said. “(Laurel) is down, and I don’t ever want to rub it in somebody’s face. We got what we needed, some positive stuff moving forward. It was good to get everybody in the game and a lot of minutes.”
