NATCHEZ — A robbery was foiled early Monday morning when a store clerk reportedly fired a gun at an armed man attempting to rob Zipy on Martin Luther King Jr. Street.
Natchez Police Sgt. Jerry Ford said the clerk reported that an unidentified black man wearing all black clothing and a face covering entered the store at approximately 4 a.m., pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money from the cash register.
The clerk reportedly opened the register and stepped away from the counter. The suspect then told the clerk to give him the money, and the clerk reportedly told the suspect he could get it himself.
When the suspect reached for the money, the clerk then reportedly retrieved a gun and fired one shot, striking the lower part of the store’s door.
The suspect then reportedly fled without taking any money, Ford said.
No one was reported injured, Ford said, and no charges have been filed in the incident.
Police believe the clerk and suspect were the only people in the store at the time of the incident, Ford said.
Video footage of the incident was obtained by the police department, Ford said, but the suspect has not been identified.
