NATCHEZ — Natchez police investigators say they believe a reported robbery at the Natchez Mall Tuesday afternoon may actually have been a botched drug deal.

Police officers were called to the Natchez Mall shortly before 3 p.m. after a woman reported that she was walking to her car when a man approached her, snatched money out of her hand and fled in a silver convertible car. The woman reported the suspect was not armed.

When officers arrived at the mall, the woman had left the scene and is currently not cooperating with police, Natchez Police Detective Jerry Ford said.

Officers later pulled over a vehicle matching the description of the car in which the suspect reportedly fled and arrested Jermond Banks, 32, 109 Mimosa Drive, for possession of marijuana, Ford said.

Although officers have been unable to verify what exactly happened, Ford said the alleged robbery might have actually started when the woman, who Ford said has been known to use drugs, attempted to buy drugs from the alleged robber.

“But she is not even cooperating with us now, and she even left the scene before the police got there and wouldn’t (file) a report,” he said.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Crime Stoppers.
