The Cathedral High School boys cross-country team scored 42 points Monday to win the MAIS AAA state championship in Clinton.
“We went in as the favorites, but the rest of the teams turned up the heat,” Cathedral coach Tommy Smith said.
Cathedral outlasted Columbia Academy and St. Aloysius, which registered 54 and 86 points, respectively.
The girls finished fifth at the meet. Gracie Foster registered the Lady Greenwave’s best time to finish 14th overall.
“All of our girls ran personal bests,” Smith said.
On the boys side, Jaylen McCoy won first-individual with a time of 17:52, while Will Vaughan and Zehlin Cornett finished seventh and eighth overall, respectively.
“We didn’t have quite the win we were expecting, but it was a clean win,” Smith said.
