NATCHEZ — A fake news story about a shooting in Natchez caused a stir as it circulated on social media over the weekend.

The story appears to have been created using the website react365.com, which allows users to “prank your friends with fake news.”

The fake news article was posted to Facebook with the headline “Insane serial killer.” The story appears to have since been removed from the website.

A post about the story on Facebook shows that the story purports to be a Mississippi News Now article reporting that “A man who shot And killed eight people to death, in the streets of Natchez Mississippi Sunday morning, has now been charged with capital murder and hallucination and psychotic syndrome.”

Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said Tuesday he heard about the rumors of a shooting circulating and investigated.

No shootings or murders were reported in Natchez or Adams County over the weekend, Patten said.

Natchez Police Detective Jerry Ford confirmed that NPD had not received any such reports.

Patten said other fake news stories created on react365.com have also been circulating on social media, and he encourages residents to use good judgment when evaluating the validity of social media posts and reposting them.
