Cathedral High School’s Ben Foster connected with running back Greg Moore on a long 87-yard touchdown pass on the Greenwave’s first play from scrimmage Friday night.
But it was all downhill from there for Cathedral.
Columbia Academy returned the ensuring kickoff for a touchdown and didn’t look back as it raced to a 60-26 win in each team’s regular-season finale.
“We came out strong,” Cathedral coach Chuck Darbonne said. “Then in typical fashion, gave up a big kick return.”
Darbonne said the turning point in the game happened late in the second quarter.
Trailing by 14 points with less than two minutes to play in the period, Columbia converted a long third down and eventually scored on the drive. The Cougars then got the ball back and scored again to lead 46-20.
“It just kind of got away from us,” Darbonne said.
Columbia allied 395 total yards to Cathedral’s 265.
The Greenwave passed for 202 yards on 18 attempts.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Darbonne said he was pleased with his squad’s efforts against one of the state’s top teams in the state.
“The way we battled with a really good team … they’re up there with the Simpson’s and ACCS’ of the state, and we battled,” he said. “We had momentum at the end of the half, and just lost it and couldn’t recover.”
Cathedral will be the No. 12 seed for MAIS AAA and will travel to Manchester Academy next week.
