Happy Anniversary, Lovely Lane United Methodist Church!
Lovely Lane United Methodist Church will celebrate its 65th anniversary this week. In the summer of 1951, several families who lived in the Morgantown area were interested in trying to organize a new Methodist church. The group met on Sunday afternoons in the homes of Mrs. and Mrs. Herbert Reed, Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Groves, as well as others. On Oct. 21, 1951, Lovely Lane Methodist Church held its organizational meeting under the oak trees on property donated for the church with the Rev. Shaw Gaddy presiding over the service. As the service ended, 17 people transferred their membership from other churches and one joined the congregation on profession of faith. That fall afternoon, those 18 signed the new membership roll, joined hands and sang “Blest Be the Tie That Binds.”
Sixty-five years later, Lovely Lane UMC remains a church dedicated to spreading the love of Christ in our community. On Sunday at 6 p.m., John Wesley, who is known as the father of Methodism, will visit the congregation of Lovely Lane. The Rev. Jim Matheny will portray John Wesley.
If Lovely Lane UMC has played a role in your life, please join us this Sunday for regular morning worship at 11 a.m. or at 6 p.m. for our celebration with John Wesley. If you are looking for a church home, we would love for you to come and be part of Lovely Lane’s next 65 years serving the Lord.
The public is invited. We hope to see you Sunday!
