Tyler Thomassie threw two touchdown passes and Scout Chandler had a pair of touchdown runs as the Centreville Academy Tigers overcame a rough first half to defeat the Cathedral Green Wave 27-9 Friday night.
“It was a big win for us,” Centreville assistant coach Robbie Isonhood said. “They were more physical than we expected them to be. They have great defensive ends.”
Cathedral struck first on Jae Eidt’s 8-yard touchdown run at the 4:08 mark of the first quarter, but the extra point was no good.
The Tigers took its first lead of the game with 7:10 to go in the second quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run by Scout Chandler and Wyatt Brabham’s extra point. However, the Green Wave retook the lead when Daniel Garrity connected on a 28-yard field goal with 5:51 left in the second quarter for a 9-7 halftime lead.
“They moved the ball on us in the first half. We made some adjustments at halftime,” Isonhood said. “We played a better second half than we did in the first half.”
Thomassie threw touchdown passes of 25 and 57 yards to Matthew Parnell to give Centreville at 19-7 lead. Its special teams blocked a punt out of the end zone resulting in a safety for a 21-7 advantage. Chandler scored on a 6-yard run with 7:33 remaining in the ball game.
“We were able to stop the run and get some points on the board. We were able to run the ball on them and get a few passes completed,” Isonhood said.
Cathedral had 249 yards of offense, while Centreville tallied 239 yards.
Cathedral (3-6) plays at Columbia Academy at 7 p.m. Friday, while Centreville (7-2) plays at Silliman Institute.
