In an effort to jumpstart his team’s offensive efficiency, Cathedral High School coach Chuck Darbonne said there have been some adjustments this week in practice.
“We’ve changed around some personnel, and we’re playing some different personnel groups,” he said. “We want to be able to convert in third-and-1, third-and-2 and fourth-and-2 situations. We need to seize those opportunities and make those things happen. I think it’s getting better, but we’ll see.”
The Greenwave will put its new look to the test Friday night when it travels to take on Centreville Academy.
Centreville Academy coach Robbie Isonhood called Friday’s tilt a “down and dirty, old-time football game.”
“We’re a running team, and they’re primarily a running team,” he said.
Centreville (6-2) enters the contest clicking on all cylinders as its won its last three games and scored at least 33 points in all three outings, including a 55-26 win over Trinity Episcopal last week.
Cathedral (3-5), meanwhile, is attempting to reverse its recent fortune as the Greenwave have dropped three of their last four games.
Isonhood said despite Cathedral’s recent struggles, he still sees plenty of talent on the Greenwave sideline, specifically along the defensive front.
“We’re going to have a tough time with their defensive ends,” he said. “Their linebackers flow well, they flow down hill well. It’s going to be a battle.”
Darbonne said while the Tigers offense may not be flashy, it has gotten the job done this season and through the years.
“It may not be pretty to the parents in the stands, but they find their best couple of players and make sure they get them the ball,” he said. “(Centreville head coach Bill) Hurst has been there a while, and they’ve been running exactly the same offense since I can remember.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Centreville.
