NATCHEZ — The apartment of a mother accused of repeatedly abusing her 23-month-old daughter was burglarized this week.
Natchez Police Lt. Kenneth Stampley said the residence of Shalae M. Lewis, 32, at Holiday Apartments on Old Washington Road was broken into Monday.
Stampley said the door to the apartment was forced open and a television reportedly stolen.
A family member reported the burglary, Stampley said.
Lewis remains in jail after being charged last month with felony child abuse after an investigation led to Lewis reportedly confessing to repeatedly abusing her daughter.
The girl was on life support after she suffered severe head trauma, including a cracked skull and a brain hemorrhage, after reportedly being thrown or pushed down a flight of stairs.
Medical staff found that the child had cracked ribs that were healing, liver damage and burns on her body, indicating prior abuse.
Police reported Tuesday that the girl was off life support and out of the Intensive Care Unit at Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson.
Lewis’ sister Tira L. Davis, 22, was charged last week contributing to the neglect or delinquency of a child, a felony, for reportedly failing to report the abuse to authorities.
