NATCHEZ — Natchez police are searching for a suspect residents have reported burglarized at least one vehicle downtown.

Natchez Police Department Detective Jerry Ford said an unlocked SUV was burglarized while parked in the alley beside Planet Thailand restaurant on Commerce Street.

A post on the restaurant’s Facebook page reports that the burglary happened Thursday morning and includes photographs of security footage that purports to show a young black man or teenager peeking into the vehicle then opening the door and rifling through the car.

The restaurant also said in the post that the suspect was later spotted again on security looking through vehicles downtown.

Other residents also reported on the restaurant’s Facebook post that similar incidents have reportedly happened elsewhere downtown.

Ford said most of the reported burglarized vehicles were unlocked.

“Most of the burglaries that we have been getting here lately, especially in the downtown area, have been of unlocked vehicles, people who are leaving their doors unlocked,” he said. “Citizens really need to practice locking their doors, especially if you have valuables in your vehicle.”

As the holiday season approaches, Ford said, residents should be extra careful about securing their vehicles and property.

“Because it’s getting close to the holidays, people do desperate things to get money, so (residents) should be more aware of their surroundings right now.”
