FERRIDAY — Louisiana Fire Marshal investigators say a house trailer fire that claimed the life of a wheelchair-bound Ferriday woman early Friday morning started in a bedroom where the woman was found.

Louisiana Fire Marshal Chief Deputy Brant Thompson said in a statement Friday no cause of the fire has been determined, but investigators have established that the fire originated in the bedroom where Valerie Prosser, 65, died during the fire at 705 Second St.

Ferriday Fire Department Chief Joe Sontoyo said he does not currently suspect foul play.

Sontoyo said Prosser’s daughter and her family also lived at the trailer and managed to escape the fire.

Members of the family told fire investigators they attempted to rescue Prosser, but said the fire’s spread made it impossible to do so.

Sontoyo said Prosser was wheelchair-bound.

Concordia Parish Coroner Jim Graves said he pronounced Prosser dead at 3:30 a.m. Graves said the cause of death was still under investigation.

Sontoyo said firefighters were dispatched at 2:22 a.m. and did not leave until approximately 6:40 a.m. Upon arrival, Sontoyo said the trailer was fully engulfed in flames.

Sontoyo said Concordia Fire District No. 2 assisted with the fire and a total of 15 firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

Sontoyo said the trailer was a total loss.
