Cathedral spoils Trinity Episcopal’s homecoming

The game that pitted two of Natchez’s private schools started like a grudge match, and ended like a knockout.

The first installment of the Cathedral-Trinity football rivalry was a 42-12 rout in favor of the Greenwave. Cathedral controlled the tempo of the game with a 275-yard rushing attack, allowing just 61 yards of total offense to the Saints.

“We’ve been preaching all year that we have to be physical,” Darbonne said. “They have great athletes out there, and we were physical from the first snap.”
Roberts and the Saints suffered their fourth loss of the season, after a game he intends for his squad to learn from.

“I try to tell these guys everything can be a learning experience,” Trinity head coach Graham Roberts said. “I have a group of guys that can learn from this.”

The game’s first five drives resulted in no points and a combined 22-yards for both teams, but a Trinity turnover on downs gave Cathedral good field position at the Trinity 16-yard line.

Less than one minute into the second quarter, Cathedral’s Craig Bradley scored the first of his five touchdowns to break the stalemate. Bradley said he had been recovering from some soreness for the past week, but he said the hometown gave added extra incentive for him to suit up on Friday.

“If it wasn’t for this game I probably wouldn’t have tried to come back as fast,” Bradley said. “When the adrenaline was pumping I felt fine.”

After forcing a Trinity punt, Cathedral grinded to a 4:52 drive led by running back Greg Moore’s six carries for 34 yards.

Cathedral kept Trinity’s big-play machine Kevontaye Caston of the field and limited him to -4 yards rushing in the first half, but the senior athlete exploited a misalignment in the Greenwave secondary at the 1:13 mark, connecting with Jakarius

Caston for a 66-yard touchdown. Cathedral trailed 7-6 heading into the second half.
An early interception from Dee Fleming didn’t provide the spark Trinity needed.

Caston fumbled on the following play and Cathedral’s Jae Eidt recovered the fumble. Bradley scored on the ensuing drive and continued his stellar night with a 52-yard touchdown on the first play of the following drive.

Bradley totaled 158 yards rushing to go with his four-touchdown night.
“We’ve been hyped up for this game for a long time,” Bradley said. “It was a big win for us.”

Moore added a late touchdown to accompany his 117 yards rushing.

Caston added an 80-yard kick return for Trinity in the third quarter, but he was otherwise kept in check. Trinity’s offense was rendered one-dimensional, able to complete just 4-of-23 passes as the Cathedral pass rush pressured Caston.

“They had a great defensive game plan for us,” Roberts said.
Cathedral (3-4, 1-1) stays home against another local rival. District rival Adams County Christian School rolls into D’Everoux Stadium fresh off a resounding 28-7 win against Columbia Academy.

“I have not seen (ACCS) on film once,” Darbonne said. “We haven’t played a team that has played ACCS before us … they have good athletes too and have more players.”

Roberts and the Saints (3-4, 2-0) have two more weeks until its season finale and final district game against Wilkinson County Christian Academy.

“We just have to show up Monday and work hard,” Roberts said.
