After a scoreless 40 minutes of soccer, the Cathedral Lady Greenwave capitalized on a couple of late miscues against the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels.

Cathedral’s 2-0 win Wednesday locks in a No. 1 seed and a home playoff game in the state tournament Tuesday, and ACCS will travel to play Hartfield Academy as the district’s No. 2 seed.

After a 5-0 victory over ACCS in the teams’ previous meeting, Cathedral head coach Dennis Hogue said he expected a more-seasoned Lady Rebel team to challenge ACCS.

“I’m not surprised (ACCS) is in the playoffs as well, and I’m glad two Natchez teams get to represent our district,” Hogue said.

ACCS head coach Jimmy Allgood said he was impressed by his team’s defense and persistence even after allowing two late scores.

“I was very impressed with the whole team,” Allgood said. “Two mistakes on our part. We had many opportunities where we could have put the ball in the back of the net. The ball bounced their way tonight.”
Early in the match, Cathedral pressured the ACCS back line and fired several shots at goalkeeper Morgan Blanton.

Blanton made a save in the match’s early minutes and a second save in the 21st minute.
In the early minutes of the second half, ACCS forward Bailey Boyd jockeyed for position after slipping behind the Cathedral defense, but her shot rolled just wide of the goal.

Cathedral’s chance came at approximately the 12th minute of the second half. ACCS committed a handball in the 18-yard box. Cathedral’s Emma Hogue took the penalty kick and ripped the ball past a diving Blanton into the top left corner of the goal to give the Lady Greenwave a 1-0 lead.

“That’s always the side I usually go to, so I just stuck with it,” Emma Hogue said.
At approximately the 26th minute of the second half, Izzy Dupre scored Cathedral’s second goal off a quick throw in from the Lady Greenwave.

Late in the match, a Cathedral defender committed a handball just outside the 18-yard box. ACCS’ Emily Williams took the direct kick, but it sailed just wide, landing right of the goal.

“It definitely gets us excited for the playoffs,” Emma Hogue said. “We’re taking the day off tomorrow because we’ve played three games. We definitely pushed through, but we’re ready.”

MAIS playoffs kick off Tuesday. The Lady Greenwave will host a first-round game, while the Lady Rebels travel to Flowood.
