With one swing of the bat, Lexie Emanuel kept Adams County Christian School’s hopes of winning the MAIS Class AAA South State Tournament alive while ending those of the Cathedral Lady Greenwave.
Emanuel hit Elizabeth Smith’s pitch to right field and the ball got past the right fielder, which resulted in a walk-off, inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the seventh inning as ACCS defeated Cathedral 2-1 in a losers’ bracket game Monday afternoon.
“It was a pitchers’ duel between Elizabeth Smith and Brianna Henson. It was 1-1 going into the bottom of the seventh,” Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said. “It was a big game the whole way through. It just came down to one miscue.”
ACCS head coach Tate Lipscomb said this game was similar to the two regular-season meetings between the District 4-AAA cross-town rivals.
Lauren Dunbar singled in courtesy runner Annalyce Riley in the top of the first inning for Cathedral, and Bailey Boyd scored in the bottom of the first for ACCS.
“It was a battle all the way through,” Lipscomb said. “It usually comes down to one mistake.”
Blackwell also attributed the loss to not getting the timely hit when the Lady Greenwave had runners on base. The Lady Greenwave left eight runners on base.
“We left a lot of runners on base. We’ve got to work on (that),” Blackwell said.
Cathedral (10-1, 2-2) will be the No. 4 seed out of South State when it plays at the Class AAA State Tournament at Shiloh Park in Brandon on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Lady Rebels moved on the losers’ bracket finals and avenged an earlier loss to Bowling Green School with an 8-7 win over the Lady Buccaneers in nine innings.
The Lady Rebels seemed to have control of the game after scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to grab a 7-2 lead. The Lady Buccaneers scored all five of their runs in the top of the seventh with two outs to send the game to extra innings.
In the bottom of the ninth, Geri Brumfield started at second base, and Shelby Mason bunted her over to third. Emanuel then hit the ball hard to second base. Bowling Green threw to home plate, but Brumfield beat the throw home for the game-winning run.
Mason gave up two runs on two hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief to pick up the win.
ACCS advanced to the finals against tournament host Silliman Institute.
The Lady Rebels came up a few runs short as they lost to the Lady Wildcats 6-4.
Home runs by Silliman in the bottom of the third and fourth innings gave the Lady Wildcats a 6-2 lead. ACCS tried to rally late, but could only muster two runs in the top of the sixth.
“We battled in the heat and humidity since noon. The girls finally ran out of steam,” Lipscomb said. “They battled hard, but they got wore out. But I’m proud of them. They never gave up.”
ACCS (17-13) will be the No. 2 seed out of South State when it plays Saturday in the Class AAA State Tournament.
