In the tradition of Natchez schools honoring distinguished causes during the football season, Trinity Episcopal has decided to be original for its first home game of 2016.
First-year head coach Graham Roberts said the Saints will be honoring police officers in the Back the Blue Line game.
“When I came on, one of the things I noticed a lot of teams were doing themed games,” Roberts said. “I absolutely don’t want to take away from those games. We wanted to do something original. We have quite a few families that are in law enforcement and they needed to know they are appreciated.”
In the first annual honorary game, Trinity (2-3) will don special uniforms as the Saints march down to play the home opener in The Pit against district rival Amite School Center (2-3).
“One of my leaders stepped up and put a message and expressed what it’s like to play in The Pit,” Roberts said. “I’ve been impressed with the way the team responded to that. Some of them warned me this would be a different week in practice for us.”
Trinity earned its first win in three weeks over Porters Chapel last week. The Saints are glad to be playing in their own classification, after three consecutive losses to two of the state’s highly regarded A-AA programs and an out-of-state powerhouse.
Trinity bounced back with a 54-14 win at Porters Chapel.
“A lot of people don’t realize what we played in the first four games this season,” Roberts said. “Our defense really took a beating, but I think we showed last week we are very capable. Our defense showed we are better than the stats were. They feel like they have chips on their shoulders right now.”
