Two men face animal cruelty charges

NATCHEZ — Two men arrested for drug crimes last week are now facing charges of animal cruelty.
Adams County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Cal Green said Carlos Jermaine Owens, 34, 8 1/2 Pogo St., and Derrick Jemelle Owens, 28, 145 Weakly Road, were charged Wednesday.
The men were two of four suspects arrested last week after an investigation into alleged drug and dogfighting crimes.
During a search of Jermaine Owens’ residence last week, agents with the ACSO Special Response Team reportedly found and seized nearly 2 pounds of marijuana, synthetic marijuana, more than 40 grams of cocaine, 57 alprazolam pills (Xanax), 21 Lortab pills, scales, baggies, packing material, two loaded pistols, one loaded rifle, surveillance equipment, two vehicles, $1,670 and other miscellaneous items.
Deputy Karen Ewing was called to the residence when items were found, Patten said, that indicated six pit bulls in the yard were being trained to fight.
Carlos Owens was also charged with possession of schedule IV controlled substance with intent, possession of schedule II controlled substance (hydrocodone) with intent, possession of schedule I controlled substance (marijuana) with intent, possession of schedule II controlled substance (cocaine) with intent, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was being held in the Adams County Jail Wednesday evening on a $250,000 bond.
Derrick Owens was also charged with possession of schedule IV controlled substance (Xanax), possession of schedule II controlled substance (hydrocodone) with intent, possession of schedule I controlled substance (marijuana), possession of schedule II controlled substance with intent and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was being held in the Adams County Jail Wednesday evening on a $106,000 bond.
