Cathedral soccer notches big home win

With the game tied at halftime between Laurel Christian School and Cathedral School, Lady Greenwave coach Dennis Hogue gave his players a much-needed pep talk.
“I told them this is do-or-die,” he said. “If we don’t beat them here, we can’t beat them at their place. They realized if we don’t win, we don’t have a chance to win the district title, or at least compete for district.”
Message received.

Gracie Bertelsen’s third goal of the match set the tone for the second half as Cathedral notched a 5-2 win over the Lady Lions Tuesday afternoon in an MAIS Division III South Division 4 game.
“The first half, we were just lethargic. They were handling the ball better. They were passing it better. There was no real intensity, and they took advantage,” Hogue said.
But Cathedral rose to the occasion in the second half.
Bertelsen scored at the 43rd minute on an assist from Emma Hogue, her second of the match. Marli Vaughn scored in the 62nd minute, and Emma capped off the memorable win with a goal of her own in the 78th minute.
“They stepped up and did not miss a beat. We controlled the ball and kept it on the their half of the field for much of the second half,” Hogue said. “Sydney Jackson had only one save (after halftime). They played like the team I knew they would be.”
Jackson finished with nine saves.
Bertelsen started her hat trick with a penalty kick goal after she was tripped by a Laurel Christian player in the first half.
The Lady Lions scored moments later to tie it at 1-1.
Bertelsen then scored in the 29th minute with an assist from Emma before the Lady Lions scored again near the end of the first half to make it 2-2.
Cathedral (5-1, 4-0) plays at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Discovery Christian School.
