Connor Mire threw three touchdown passes and Craig Bradley had two total touchdowns as the Cathedral Green Wave defeated the Brookhaven Academy Cougars 34-20 Friday night in the MAIS District 4-AAA opener for both teams.
Cathedral head coach Chuck Darbonne said his team got off to a sloppy start, but after one scoring drive, the team started playing better. The Green Wave would eventually score 28 points in the first quarter.
“We had some things we did wrong to begin with. We’re just trying to put together one good game,” Darbonne said. “We played good for a quarter and a half.”
After getting up 28-6 at the end of the opening quarter, Darbonne started subbing and that allowed Brookhaven Academy to score two touchdowns in the second half. But by that time, Ron Rushing’s Cougars were already down 34-6.
In addition to Mire and Bradley on offense, Darbonne said that Caden Poole, William Doss and Robert Hargrave stepped up defensively.
“Caden had an interception. William had an interception return for a touchdown. Robert played really good,” Darbonne said.
Cathedral (2-2, 1-0) steps out of district play at 7 p.m. Friday when it travels to McComb to take on Class AAAA Parklane Academy.
