Adams County Christian School’s varsity girls’ soccer team had very few scoring opportunities against river-city rival Cathedral School on a Tuesday afternoon.

Cathedral’s defense, in front of goalkeeper Sydney Jackson, made sure it was the Lady Green Wave that ended up with a 5-0 win over the Lady Rebels in MAIS Division III District 4 action.

“They really couldn’t put together an attack. They took a couple of long shots, and Sydney reached out to make the saves,” Cathedral coach Dennis Hogue said. “I’ve got a pretty stern, strong defense.”

Jackson finished with seven saves.

Marli Vaughn scored in the 22nd minute, and Emma Hogue scored the first of her two goals in the 35th minute, giving Cathedral a 2-0 lead at halftime. Hogue scored her second goal of the match in the 50th minute. The Lady Green Wave also got second-half goals from Emily Hicks and Mary Francis Sessions.

“It was our first district game. The girls were fired up and excited about it,” Hogue said. “I’ve never really see them hustle so good as they did today. It was definitely a group effort.”

Gracie Bertelsen had two assists while Sessions and Olivia Moore had one assist each.

“We moved it around really well. We worked on spreading the defense,” Hogue said.

Cathedral (1-1, 1-0) plays again at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at home against Copiah Academy. ACCS (N/A, 1-1) doesn’t play again until Wednesday, Aug. 31 at home against Discovery Christian School.

ACCS coach Jim Bob Allgood was unavailable for comment Tuesday.
