NATCHEZ — The second trial of a Natchez teen accused of shooting and killing a 16-year-old in December 2014 will begin today.

Eddie Minor III, 19, is being tried for murder and armed robbery in the death of Jessie Taylor.

Taylor was reportedly meeting Minor and Emmanuel Latham on Dec. 28, 2014, on Beaumont Street to purchase synthetic marijuana when the three became involved in a fight that turned into a shooting match after Minor and Latham reportedly tried to rob Taylor.

Taylor was transported to the former Natchez Regional Medical Center, where attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Mississippi’s chief medical examiner testified at the first trial that Taylor died of wounds sustained from two gunshots to the back.

The retrial comes after the first trial in the case ended with a hung jury in November 2015.

During Minor’s first trial, much of the state’s case hinged on the testimony of Latham, who is being tried separately, as he was the only eyewitness that could link Minor as the triggerman in Taylor’s death. The defense made a case that attempted to undermine Latham’s credibility as a witness.

The jurors in that trial were split 9-3 on the murder charge and 10-2 on the armed robbery charge.

The trial is being conducted in Sixth Judicial District Judge Forrest “Al” Johnson’s court at the Adams County Courthouse. The trial will begin at 9 a.m. with jury selection and is expected to last two days.
