NATCHEZ — Natchez Ward 5 Alderman Benjamin Davis said he is hosting a community meeting today in hopes to bring local government closer to his constituents.

Davis, who took office July 1, said the meeting is aimed at creating a forum through which Ward 5 residents can voice concerns or make requests.

“I want to get out there and get working on a lists of things that residents want me to do,” Davis said.

The meeting is also intended to be educational for residents, and city department heads will be on hand to explain their roles and answer questions, Davis said.

“There are a lot of people in my ward that don’t know about city government,” Davis said. “So if they have questions, for instance, about how things work or how to go about things, they can get them answered.”

As a first-term alderman, Davis said he has learned a great deal in a little less than a month and hopes to share that knowledge with residents.

“I am learning something new every day,” he said.

Davis said he hopes to host community meetings every three months, tracking his own progress and ability to resolve residents’ concerns.

“I want to hear from residents, put their concerns on a list and check those concerns off that list as we go,” he said.

While Davis is specifically encouraging Ward 5 residents to attend the meeting, he said all city residents are welcome to attend.

“I hope (residents) show up and let their voice be heard,” he said. “It should be very educational.”

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Louis Gunning Adams County Community Safe Room on the Natchez High School campus.
