NATCHEZ — A Natchez man is behind bars for reportedly shooting an ex-girlfriend early Sunday morning outside Club 601 on Martin Luther King Jr. Street.
Natchez Police Chief Daniel White said Armond Shannon, 46, 108 Old D’Evereux St., was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
Shannon allegedly used a handgun to shoot a woman with whom he had been in a previous relationship. The victim was shot once on the left side of her body. She was treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Shannon reportedly fled the scene on foot, and police apprehended him at approximately 1:30 p.m. Sunday at a Cherry Street residence.
He was being held without bond Sunday evening in the Natchez City Jail.
The shooting marks the eighth shooting in Natchez and Adams County in the past three weeks, and happened less than 24 hours after local elected officials, law enforcement officers and residents gathered on the bluff Saturday morning to decry recent violence at a unity prayer service.
Natchez Mayor Darryl Grennell said Sunday evening he was disturbed to hear about the shooting.
“I hope we can bring more unity to the community, in homes and in neighborhoods and throughout the entire area,” he said. “We just hope the community will begin to work together to prevent these types of incidents from occurring.”
