NATCHEZ — One man and two teenagers were shot during a gunfight late Sunday night on Davis Court in Adams County.

A man reportedly exchanged gunfire shortly after 11 p.m. with a group of juveniles after the juveniles, who arrived in two vehicles, allegedly came to the man’s father’s house attempting to pick a fight with the man’s 14-year-old son, Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said in a statement.

The man reportedly told the juveniles to get in their cars and leave. As the juveniles drove by the house, some reportedly fired shots. The man reportedly retrieved his gun and began firing back.

ACSO has yet to determine exactly how many shooters were involved, Patten said. A bullet grazed the man during the gunfight while his 14-year-old son was shot in the left shoulder and later airlifted to an Alexandria, La., hospital for treatment.

A 16-year-old driver of one of the vehicles was shot in the right shoulder. The teen is reportedly in stable condition, Patten said.Approximately nine individuals were involved in the shooting, which reportedly stemmed from an incident that occurred earlier this year at school.

Patten said the shooting remains under investigation and arrests are expected soon.

The shooting is one of at least six that have occurred in Natchez and Adams County in approximately the past two weeks.

Most of the reported shootings have occurred inside the city of Natchez.

On the night of June 20, Anthony Haywood, 30, of Natchez was shot to death while driving on St. Catherine Street.

A few hours later, Natchez police responded to a shooting at the Zipy gas station on Old Washington Road. Shooters reportedly drove past the gas station, parked and fired multiple shots at an unoccupied SUV in the parking lot. No injuries were reported.

On June 28, multiple shots were fired into a house at St. Catherine and Rembert streets. One person was inside the house, but no injuries were reported. Residents have reported other nearby houses may have been shot at as well.

Two shootings were reported Sunday in the city.

A 23-year-old man was shot multiple times in the legs at Holiday Apartments.

Suspected of the shooting is Michael Thompson, 19, of 17 Jones Road. A warrant has been issued for Thompson’s arrest.

A man was shot twice Sunday night while walking a dog on South Concord Avenue. The victim was airlifted to Rapides Regional Medical Center with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

Natchez Police Chief Daniel White said police have not been able to determine whether any of the shootings are connected.

“I am not going to say they are all unrelated, but right now, we can’t say if any of them are connected,” he said. “We are investigating to see if any of them are connected.”

No arrests have been made in the shootings. White said police have not been able to get much help from residents who may have information about the shootings.

“Our main problem is that we have people who just won’t talk,” White said. “They will not talk, and we know they probably know something, so we have to go out on our own and try to investigate what happened. That can be difficult without (the public’s cooperation).”

White said he understands some residents may not talk to police for fear of retaliation.

White encourages anyone with information about the shootings or other crimes to call Crime Stoppers, which is an anonymous tip line. Information about callers is not gathered, therefore protecting their identity, White said.

White said in light of the recent violence, NPD has increased its police presence on the streets.

“We have beefed up patrol and pulled in some officers who were off-duty, so we would have more manpower,” White said.

The police department has also conducted multiple safety checkpoints on St. Catherine Street and Dumas Drive, resulting in the apprehension of multiple guns.

“What people will do is when they see the checkpoint, they’ll stop and start throwing things out of the car,” White said. “When we went back to check, we found that it was guns they were throwing out of the window.”

The police department plans to continue the checkpoints throughout the city, White said.

Anyone with information about the recent shootings should contact Crime Stoppers at 601-442-5000.

Crime Stoppers is anonymous and offers a reward of up t $1,000 for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect.
