Friday filled with inauguration ceremonies

NATCHEZ — On Friday, newly elected officials throughout the Miss-Lou will raise their right hands to take theirs oaths of office and usher in the next four years of four local governments.
In Natchez, Pearl Street in front of City Hall will be blocked off as Natchez Mayor-elect Darryl Grennell, board of aldermen and Municipal Judge-elect Lisa Jordan Dale are sworn into office on the steps of City Hall starting at 9 a.m.
The inauguration ceremony will include music from Alvin Shelby and local choir members, presentation of colors, the national anthem performed by Grennell’s sister Lljuna Grennell Weir, an invocation by the Rev. Birdon Mitchell and introductory remarks from retired Adams County Chancery Clerk Tommy O’Beirne.
Grand Village of the Natchez Indians Director Lance Harris will serve as the master of ceremonies.
Following the administration of the oaths of office, Grennell will give an inaugural address, followed by an inaugural prayer by the Rev. Nance Hixon, closing music and retiring of the colors.
An inauguration reception will follow at the Historic Natchez Foundation in conjunction with two openings of exhibits at the foundation and at the Natchez Museum of African-American History and Culture.
At 2 p.m., the mayor and board of aldermen will convene in the Natchez City Council Chambers for the appointments and swearing-in of the city clerk, city attorney, deputy city clerk, city auditor, judge pro tem and other officials.
In preparation for the inauguration ceremony, South Pearl Street at the north side of State Street will be barricaded at 7:45 a.m., and Market Street at S. Wall Street will be barricaded at 8:45 a.m. until later in the morning.
Seating will be reserved for special guests in chairs on Pearl Street. Other attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or other seating.
In the event of rain, the ceremony will be in the city council chambers.
Grennell said his inauguration committee — Virginia Benoist, Sandra Burkes, Chesney Doyle and Vidal Blankenstein — organized the inauguration ceremony with help from City Hall staff.
Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler and Clarksdale Mayor Bill Luckett are also scheduled to attend the ceremony.
Vidalia Mayor Buz Craft said he plans to attend the Natchez ceremony before his own inauguration ceremony with the board of aldermen and police chief at noon at the Vidalia Conference and Convention Center.
Grennell said he also hopes to attend the Vidalia ceremony, as the two mayors have pledged to work together for the betterment of the Miss-Lou.
The Vidalia ceremony will include refreshments, and Craft encourages residents to attend.
“We will be mingling with the crowd, and we hope people will come out and meet me and the aldermen and the police chief,” she said. “We’re ready to get in and go to work. I think it’s going to be a good day for our town.”
In Ferriday, Mayor-elect Sherrie Jacobs said Ferriday’s swearing-in ceremony for herself, the board of aldermen and police chief will be brief and without pageantry.
Jacobs said she plans to briefly address the town’s staff following the ceremony.
“We may do something down the road to celebrate, but right now, we have way too much work to do,” she said.
Ferriday’s inauguration ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. at Ferriday Town Hall on Second Street.
The Town of Clayton will host a swearing-in ceremony for Mayor-elect Josephine Washington and other officials at 1 p.m. at Clayton Town Hall.
All inauguration events are open to the public.
